On Saturday, Jan. 5, Brendan would be 40 years old. This calls for a pizza party! We are planning a celebration here in Albuquerque and invite you to do the same.

You can watch Brendan’s slide show below, view the gallery, and art journal.

National Sketch and Journal Day

Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2017

To Honor Brendan Wenberg (Jan. 5, 1979 – Oct. 24, 2014)

birthday 1

Throughout his life Brendan kept journals and sketches of the art he planned to create. His journals are full of detailed mazes, designs for his Muny sculptures, and honest sharing about the events of the day and his feelings, plans, and actions. Brendan preferred 11 by 17 black spiral bound journals and usually sketched with Faber-Castell Pitt artist pens. I have two of Brendan’s sketch pens and one still writes. Brendan’s journaling was usually done in a coffee shop but anywhere with a table and a place to put down his loaded back pack would work. I remember on the birthday before his move to Austin, Brendan went to the Flying Star on Central Blvd. in ABQ and did a self portrait in his journal.

Brendan Journaling

Brendan Journaling

I am inviting you on Oct. 24, 2017, the anniversary of Brendan’s death, to go to a public gathering place like a coffee shop and sketch and journal. Here in Albuquerque, we have the popular Flying Star Café. Brendan would journal at the one in Santa Fe, which has since closed. Send us a photo of you journaling and possibly a picture of the page if you care to share. We will try to share these pictures on this site and on Brendan’s FB page.

But you don’t have to wait until Oct. 24 to work on your sketch journal. Journaling is a wonderful form of therapy that records your daily musings, feelings, and plans. If you see someone else drawing in a journal or sketching, greet them and you may become friends. It is a wonderful way to meet other artists and diarists.
